In the 2027 general elections, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other parties will face competition from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a significant opposition party.
Former vice president Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, and well-known banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen were all cleared by the ADC to run in the presidential primary.
The ADC leadership’s attempts to reach a consensus on a nominee failed. The presidential candidates went to direct primaries on May 25, 2026, after the consensus negotiations came to a stalemate.
Rotimi Amaechi, a former minister of transportation, has challenged the results of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary poll, claiming that many voters were denied the right to vote on Monday.
Ahead of the results’ official announcement on Tuesday, May 26, Amaechi issued a statement claiming that the process was seriously flawed, lacked credibility, and fell short of the party’s earlier pledges of transparency and impartiality.
Amaechi has categorically denounced the announcement of what he called “concocted results” in response to accusations of significant voter disenfranchisement, manipulation, and grave electoral fraud in the majority of the nation during the ADC presidential primaries.
It is impossible that around 80% of party members were denied the opportunity to cast ballots, and he would be expected to accept such outcomes. He maintained that party members’ wishes were not reflected in the outcomes.
Amaechi also charged the party with the same election malpractices that it had previously denounced in the Independent National Election Commission (INEC) and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Hours after Amaechi rejected the procedure, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, another candidate, rejected the exercise due to purported anomalies.
Hayatu-Deen, the former managing director of the now-defunct FSB International Bank, voiced worry over accusations of rampant electoral malpractice around the nation in a statement released on Tuesday, May 26. He noted that he had personally witnessed some of the instances.
