Security personnel have detained seven senior commanders from Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) arrested at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina State.
Security personnel detained the seven alleged terror leaders on Thursday, June 18, 2026, while returning from the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage via the airport. The suspects were traveling straight back to Nigeria from Saudi Arabia after completing the yearly Hajj journey in Mecca,
Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the interior minister, formally announced the high-profile arrests. The Federal Government is praising the operation as a significant advancement in national security.
They were transported to Abuja for further investigation after first being apprehended and taken to the Department of State Services (DSS) for questioning.
Nigeria’s recently updated and automated digital identification database was used to flag the suspects, according to the Minister of Interior. The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) database was smoothly connected to sync in real time with the Nigeria Immigration Service system and Interpol’s I-24/7 global network, which is why the operation was successful.
The declaration came after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act 2026 into law, a historic move that tightened biometric cross-border surveillance.
The incident has generated much public interest and rigorous scrutiny across Nigerian media channels, notwithstanding the security success.
How well-known, wanted terrorist leaders obtained foreign passports, got past the first pre-departure screening procedures, and left the country unnoticed is a question raised by citizens and security experts.
