According to the Federal Government, the high flood risk areas indicated in 2026 include 226 local government areas in 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation Joseph Utsev made this statement during the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency’s public presentation of the 2026 Annual Flood Outlook on Wednesday at the State Banquet Hall of the Aso Villa in Abuja,
There are 14,118 localities in 266 local government districts throughout 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory that are at high risk of flooding.
Abia, Adamawa, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, Zamfara, and the Federal Capital Territory.
He also revealed that community-based flood forecasting was used in this year’s annual flood outlook, meaning that forecasts are now customized to certain towns for prompt intervention.
Emergency reaction mechanisms should be triggered in response to this warning in order to lessen the difficulties frequently brought on by these severe floods, which in the past have inundated numerous communities and resulted in significant damage and fatalities. Time is of the essence.
