Justice Binta Nyako has presided over multiple mass trials of alleged Boko Haram militants at the Federal High Court of Nigeria in Abuja. Hundreds of suspects were tried in batches across several trials. In many terrorism-related instances, the court found several defendants guilty and punished them.
Depending on the offence, some individuals were found guilty and given jail sentences ranging from ten years to life. Due to insufficient evidence, some people were found not guilty.
Three defendants were accused of being members of Boko Haram in the most recent trial, in violation of Section 25 of the Terrorism (Prohibition and Prevention) Act, 2022. Participation in terrorist acts, supplying the group with food, clothing, and logistics, as well as receiving and managing finances for the group, were additional counts.
The court sentenced the following individuals to 10–20 years in prison despite the defence’s plea for mercy:
• Hamatu Modu received a 10-year prison sentence.
• Isa Ali received a 10-year prison sentence.
• Shehu Bukar received a 20-year prison sentence.
Additionally, the judge mandated that they undergo de-radicalization and rehabilitation. programmes.
These trials are a component of Nigeria’s larger initiative to deal with insurgency-related offences that have resulted in extensive carnage and displacement.
