In several sections of northern Nigeria, a string of violent incidents over Easter 2026 resulted in numerous fatalities, kidnappings, and property damage. During the holiday, there was widespread terror due to coordinated attacks that targeted church services, community people, and security personnel, mostly in the northern and middle-belt regions.
At least five to eight worshippers were killed, and over thirty others were kidnapped when terrorists stormed a church in Ariko town in Kachia Local Government Area (LGA), Kaduna State, on Easter Sunday, April 5. After engaging the terrorists, Nigerian Army troops recovered five bodies and freed 31 hostages.
At least nine to seventeen persons were killed when terrorists attacked the Mbalom community in Gwer East LGA, Benue State, earlier on Saturday. Numerous homes were set on fire, and many inhabitants were forced to flee their homes.
At least three persons, including a police officer, were killed by bandits who targeted communities in Katsina State’s Matazu LGA.
Eight attendees were kidnapped by gunmen during an Easter service in Kwara State, and reports indicate that similar incidents may have taken place in other places.
Similar attacks occurred on Palm Sunday in Plateau State, which resulted in a curfew after at least 12 persons were reported dead.
As the nation struggles with security concerns from armed gangs known as bandits, attacks and kidnappings for ransom are frequent occurrences in northern Nigeria. Despite the military’s effective rescue efforts, people have voiced concerns about the security services’ incapacity to stop the attacks.
In the meantime, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has promised that his government will eradicate terrorism and banditry. On Saturday, April 4, he delivered the speech during the Gateway International Airport’s opening in Iperu, Ogun State.
According to President Tinubu, “We will win over banditry and terrorism. I give you the assurance that we will invest more in our people. The deployment of additional vehicles is strengthening our resolve to protect lives and property.”
Despite the President’s prior assurances, the killings have persisted. As they say, “action speaks louder than words,” and this is the moment to put an end to insecurity in the country.
