Hauwa’u Mukhtar, an arms courier, was found guilty of terrorism-related offenses and sentenced to death by hanging by a Federal High Court in Katsina State.
Moving munitions connected to bandit activity in Katsina State led to her arrest. She was later taken before the court by security personnel on charges relating to terrorism.
On September 16, 2023, Hauwa’u Mukhtar, the convict, was apprehended by DSS agents at Jibia Motor Park in Katsina State. He was allegedly trying to deliver 438 rounds of 7.62 millimetre ammunition, which is frequently used in assault rifles like the AK-47, to Ado, a notorious bandit leader who operates within the Dunburum Forest axis of neighbouring Zamfara State.
The suspect was then charged with two counts by the DSS before a Katsina State High Court. The prosecution used exhibits, documentary evidence, and witnesses to connect the defendant to the crimes during the trial.
The prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt, according to the court presided over by Justice A. B. Bawale. After finding Mukhtar guilty on both charges, the judge condemned her to death by hanging on June 16 in compliance with the Katsina State, 2021 Penal Code Law.
The ruling is regarded as a historic win in the battle against banditry and terrorism. It shows how security agencies can disrupt criminal networks and obtain successful prosecutions by following the proper legal procedures.
It is anticipated that the conviction will reduce the flow of weapons and undermine the networks supporting criminal activities throughout the North-West.
The DSS has successfully prosecuted women on charges of assisting and abetting terrorist activities and conspiracy to conduct terrorism.
