28 students have been expelled from the University of Abuja (formerly Yakubu Gowon University) for offenses ranging from drug use to exam malpractice and other serious misconduct. Additionally, the university has revoked the certificates that were previously given to 15 former students who disregarded the disciplinary committee’s repeated invitations.
Following consideration of the Student Disciplinary Committee’s findings, the decision was made at the institution’s 191st regular Senate meeting. Dr. Habib Yakoob, the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, revealed the news in a statement.
The announcement claims that the expulsion of twenty-eight students for a variety of disciplinary offenses has been accepted by the University of Abuja Senate. Assault, exam malpractice, conspiracy, burglary, theft, cult-related activities, drug possession and use, falsifying “O” Level results uploaded for admission, and absenteeism were among the offences for which the impacted students were found guilty.
Additionally, 33 students were warned for offences like fighting, conspiracy, and hostel racketeering, while nine students were exonerated of any culpability following investigations.
Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi, the Senate’s chairman and Vice Chancellor, commented on the incident, saying the university would not lower its standards or put up with behavior that could jeopardize campus safety and academic integrity.
According to him, the university’s intellectual integrity is untouchable, and anyone who transgresses it will face the proper consequences. In addition to enforcing discipline, the institution aims to mentor pupils toward academic success and good citizenship.
Fawehinmi went on to say that the school was still dedicated to providing a secure and comfortable learning environment for both employees and students while also bolstering counseling, orientation, and student engagement initiatives to encourage responsible behavior and deter future violations.
