Nigeria uses both military operations and the rehabilitation and reintegration of fighters who have surrendered as part of its counterinsurgency strategy. Operation Safer Corridor was started by Nigeria in 2016 to assist Boko defectors in readjusting to civilian life. Low-level jihadist recruits who serve in both combatant and non-combatant capacities are the program’s primary target category. Hundreds of former Boko Haram combatants have gone through disarmament, deradicalization, and reintegration since the group’s founding.

At least 117 remorseful terrorists from Borno State have finished the Disarmament, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration (DRR) program under Operation Safer Corridor amid Boko Haram/ISWAP attacks.

On February 19, the Operation Safe Corridor Coordinator announced that 117 graduates have finished the DRR procedure at Mallam Sidi Camp. The former terrorists who have undergone rehabilitation are awaiting procedures for their handover to state and federal authorities for reintegration.

Communities continue to be suspicious of certain returns, though. The reintegration program has not been able to overcome the ongoing antagonism and rejection from the public, who see it as giving terrorists or criminals who deserve punishment amnesty and assistance.

In the meantime, three trucks carrying fish were stopped and burned by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists in the Mile-forty neighborhood of Magumeri LGA in Borno State. The incident happened on Thursday, February 19, when the truckers were attacked while delivering fish to Maiduguri.
