Following recurrent and extensive acts of violence performed by jihadists and other armed groups in several regions of northern Nigeria, armed assailants have reportedly killed 170 people in two villages, Woro and Nuku, in Kaiama Local Government Area, Kwara state.

On Tuesday, February 3 – until early February 4, 2026, gunmen struck the two villages of Woro and neighboring Nuku in the Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, western and central Nigeria.

No group has officially claimed responsibility, but suspected Boko Haram terrorists or kindred Islamic extremist factions active in the region are largely believed to be involved. The Lakurawa, an armed organization connected with the Islamic State, is also thought to have carried out the attacks.

According to Kaiama lawmaker, Sa’idu Baba Ahmed, gunmen had picked up locals, shackled their hands behind their backs, and executed them. The assailants also destroyed homes and shops.

Numerous individuals, including the traditional ruler of the hamlet, are reported to have escaped into the nearby woods with gunshot wounds, and their whereabouts are unknown.

Jihadists had already arrived weeks or months before under the pretense of preaching, according to several survivors and officials, and occasionally they insisted that the locals adopt sharia rule. When the people pushed back, the militants opened fire during Tuesday’s sermon.

The Kwara State governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, condemned the incident as a cowardly manifestation of discontent by terrorist cells following the current counter-terrorism actions in portions of the state.

In order to stabilize the area and pursue the attackers, President Bola Tinubu ordered the deployment of a military unit and initiated a security operation.
