Insurgents like Boko Haram and breakaway organizations like the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP), which have committed crimes against civilians, are typically linked to Nigeria’s insecurity. Tens of thousands of people have died, and over two million have been displaced as a result of Boko Haram’s attack, which continues until 2026. They use suicide bombs, kidnappings, torture, rape, forced marriages, child soldier recruiting, and attacks on people, traditional and religious leaders, and government infrastructure.

Suspected Boko Haram militants massacred several residents and kidnapped over 100 women and children in Ngoshe town, located in the Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.

At least 14 Nigerian soldiers were killed, and numerous more were injured in an attack on the Army post in Ngoshe town by suspected ISWAP fighters. Another victim was a local imam.

Nigeria has been plagued by terrorist and insurgency warfare for a number of years. Additionally, armed groups referred to as “bandits” in the area have committed several crimes, such as rape, murder, kidnapping, coordinated cattle rustling, and pillage.

Preying on established farming communities serves as a major source of motivation for these non-state armed bandit organizations, who are primarily driven by criminal objectives. Large tracts of farmland are also being occupied by armed bandits, which has caused many farmers to flee their properties for fear of being attacked. For the gangs, kidnapping for ransom is a significant source of revenue, and the crime continues to pose a serious danger to Nigeria’s security environment.

The issue of insecurity in Nigeria has also been made worse by armed herders. In northern Nigeria and some areas of southern Nigeria, armed conflicts with farmers have intensified. Tensions have also been made worse by climate change and growing desertification in the north, which has forced many herders southward into areas farmed by populated groups due to the loss of grazing ground.

Nigeria’s peace and national growth are seriously threatened by insecurity. Recently, armed organizations like ISWAP and Boko Haram have bolstered their position by joining forces with the robbers. In order to help Nigeria fight this horrible monster, the United States has promised to provide equipment and staff training.
