From April 13 to April 23, 2026, Pope Leo XIV will go on a 10-day tour of four African nations. This will be the pontiff’s first pastoral visit to Africa and his first significant international travel in 2026.
The Pope will travel to Algeria, Angola, Equatorial Guinea, and Cameroon as part of the African tour, which the Vatican announced on Wednesday, February 25.
Despite its strategic significance in Africa and its sizable Catholic population of 25–30 million, Nigeria is not mentioned during the tour. Rather, it will be the first time a Pope has visited Algeria, a predominantly Muslim nation.
Messages of inspiration, hope, unity, love, peace, and reconciliation are always present during the Pope’s visits, which typically attract sizable audiences. Nigeria is the nation that needs this message of reconciliation and spirit the most right now. The nation is currently going through some difficult times that call for spiritual support.
The Pope may provide Nigeria particular prayers and anointing to help the country overcome the many security and socioeconomic issues it is currently facing, while President Donald Trump is sending guns and bombs as the next step in the fight against insecurity.
In light of this, prominent journalist Reuben Abati has urged the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) to advocate for a papal visit, stating that the nation urgently needs prayers in the run-up to the general elections in 2027.
However, records indicate that the Pope has visited Nigeria at least nine times between 2001 and 2016, so he is not unfamiliar with the country. However, that was prior to his May 8, 2025, election as Pope. He has a great deal of worldwide influence and carries spiritual fire and anointing in his role as Pope.
Even though Pope Leo has addressed violence in Nigeria and advocated for peace, a visit to the nation during this difficult time with a powerful message of forgiveness, healing, reconciliation, and peace will have a significant impact.
