According to the 2026 edition of the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, the University of Ibadan (UI) is now the top-ranked university in Nigeria.
Nigeria is the most represented nation in Sub-Saharan Africa, with 24 of its universities appearing in the global ranking for the first time.
As the top-ranked universities in the nation, only the University of Ibadan (UI) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) qualified for the 801–1000 worldwide band.
Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, Computer Science, Education Studies, Engineering, Law, Life Sciences, Medical and Health, Physical Sciences, Psychology, and Social Sciences are among the 11 academic categories covered by the rankings, which include 2,191 universities across 115 nations.
801–1000 (Top 1000 globally)
- University of Ibadan (UI)
- University of Lagos (UNILAG)
Bayero University Kano (BUK), Covenant University (CU), and Landmark University make the list in the 1001–1200 band.
1001–1200
- Bayero University Kano (BUK).
- Covenant University (CU).
- Landmark University.
Many other universities were assigned to the 1201–1500 and 1501+ bands.
1201–1500
- Ahmadu Bello University (ABU).
- Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUT Minna).
- University of Ilorin (UNILORIN).
- University of Jos (UNIJOS).
- University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).
