Bandits have again assaulted Agwara Local Government Area of Niger state, setting ablaze the divisional police station and a church, and abducting roughly five residents in an early Sunday, February 1 raid.
After attacking the Agwara Police Station, the attackers set fire to a portion of the local United Methodist Church (UMC).
The incident was verified by SP Wasiu Abiodun, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PRO). He added that a police tactical unit confronted the attackers but was eventually subdued
According to Abiodun, the bandits used suspected explosives to set the police station on fire before advancing to the church, where they torched part of the edifice.
“On 1/2/2026 at about 3.40 am, armed bandits invaded Agwara community, attacked the Police station, where they were engaged by the tactical team on ground, used suspected dynamite to set the station ablaze, having overpowered the team,” Abiodun said.
He stated that the perpetrators thereafter proceeded to other parts of the village and seized roughly five persons, whose identities were still to be determined.
“The terrorists later moved to UMC church in the community, burnt part of the church, proceeded to other areas and abducted about five persons whose identity is yet to be ascertained.”
