Nigeria defeated Egypt 4-2 on penalties, solidifying its distinctive reputation in the history of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations.

On Saturday, January 17, 2026, the Super Eagles defeated Egypt to win the AFCON 2025 third-place playoff.

At the Stade Mohammed V in Casablanca, Nigeria defeated on penalty kicks to win a record 9th Africa Cup of Nations bronze medal, and Stanley Nwabali was the hero, saving two of them, including one from Mohammed Salah.

The Super Eagles’ bronze medal win has been praised by the Federal Government, which said it is a testament to Nigeria’s longstanding and remarkable heritage in African football.

As an inspiration to millions of Nigerians, Senate President Godswill Akpabio has congratulated the Super Eagles on winning the bronze.

Nigeria has won AFCON titles (Gold medals) 3 times, 1980, 1994, and 1980.

Nigeria finished third (Bronze medals) on 9 occasions – 1976. 1978, 1992, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2019, and 2025/25.

This makes Nigeria one of the most decorated teams in AFCON history.
