In the Agwarra and Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, armed men believed to be terrorists operating out of the Kainji Lake National Park assaulted a local market, setting it on fire, killing forty-two villagers, and kidnapping several more.

The incident happened on Saturday in Demo village’s Kasuwan Daji market, where the bandits allegedly entered through Kabe.

In addition to setting the market on fire, the attackers allegedly stole food and other goods, opened fire on the residents, and kidnapped numerous people along the routes that led to the vast Kainji Lake National Park wilderness.

In a statement released on Sunday, SP Wasiu Abiodun, the Public Relations Officer for the Niger State Police Command, confirmed the attack, stating that suspected bandits from the National Park Forest along Kabe District had infiltrated Kasuwan Daji in Demo Village via Kabe.

A joint security team had attended the area, according to Abiodun, and efforts to free the abducted victims were still underway.

“On 03/01/2026 at about 9 p.m., information received revealed that at about 4:30 p.m. of the same date, suspected bandits from the National Park forest along Kabe District invaded Kasuwan Daji, located at Demo village via Kabe, burnt the market, looted shops, and carted away food items,” Abiodun, a Superintendent of Police, said.

“On 04/01/2026 at about 8 a.m., a report indicated that a joint security team visited the scene, and over 30 victims lost their lives during the attack.

Additionally, some persons were abducted. The abducted people are still being rescued. We’ll keep you informed of any updates.

“They destroyed the market, looted shops and stole food items, killing over 30 people and abducting an unspecified number of residents,” Abiodun stated, noting that rescue and stabilization efforts were still on and that a combined security team had visited the impacted towns.

As new information about the number of murders, kidnappings, and destruction in the Agwara and Borgu local government areas surfaced, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ordered a more intense manhunt for the terrorists behind the fatal attacks on villages in Niger State.

The order came after armed bandits who were thought to have escaped from nearby woodland enclaves attacked Kasuwan Daji and the nearby villages, killing over 40 people and kidnapping scores more, including students.

President Tinubu said in a statement on Sunday that he had given the Director-General of the Department of State Services, the Inspector-General of Police, the Chief of Defense Staff, the Minister of Defense, and Service Chiefs instructions to hunt down the terrorists behind the Kasuwan Daji attack and ensure they are brought swiftly to justice.

In addition, Tinubu ordered that all kidnapped victims be rescued right away and that security measures be increased in susceptible locations, especially those near wooded regions.
