The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, made a sincere plea for unity in his New Year’s greeting, calling it the country’s most effective defense against insecurity.
Issa-Onilu emphasized that peace and progress cannot be attained by government efforts alone and urged citizens to revive patriotism, embrace collective responsibility, and actively participate in national life.
The NOA chief stressed that insecurity flourishes in areas where people feel disengaged from the country’s affairs, even as he acknowledged the government’s continuous efforts to address security issues.
According to him, sustainable security can only be realized when Nigerians perceive themselves as stakeholders and work together for the common good.
He warned that groups determined to split the nation frequently take advantage of these fault lines to erode peace and togetherness, and he challenged Nigerians to rise above regional, ethnic, and religious divides.
Issa-Onilu stated that a resurgence of common national ideals is necessary to rebuild trust in the Nigerian project, adding that civic engagement, solidarity, and vigilance must become daily commitments rather than merely catchphrases.
He noted recent international cooperation with the United States that resulted in a successful bombing of terrorist enclaves and praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s resolute security posture.
He praised the operation as a manifestation of resolute leadership and Nigeria’s developing global security alliances.
Additionally, he urged youth organizations, civil society organizations, religious leaders, and traditional authorities to take the initiative in fostering tolerance, respect for the law, and harmonious cohabitation within their communities.
In closing, he urged Nigerians to stay optimistic, involved, and dedicated to creating a safer and better Nigeria for everybody. He wished Nigerians a year full of peace, unity, and realized dreams.
