As of February 16, 2026, the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) was expected to rule on the petition filed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for fielding an ineligible player. On a penalty shootout, the DR Congo prevailed 4–2. The protest was filed by Nigeria on December 15, 2025.

On February 16, FIFA was supposed to make a decision about both nations to determine who might represent Africa in the playoffs. With FIFA’s Congress about to decide who would compete in the playoffs next month to represent Africa in the 2026 World Cup, all eyes were on the final decision.

However, that day arrived and went by with no announcement, which raised concerns about the result. Nigeria’s petition has not yet been upheld or rejected by a confirmed public decision.

FIFA did not mention Nigeria’s pending petition in its 2025 CAS and Football Annual Report, which was recently released.

However, given that the World Cup qualifying intercontinental playoffs will be held in Mexico on March 26 and 31, 2026, FIFA’s silence is concerning. It would undoubtedly take time for either Nigeria or the Democratic Republic of the Congo to get ready for the qualifying matches.

Nonetheless, there are explanations for the postponement of FIFA’s decision. FIFA takes its time making its announcement. It enlists a separate FIFA judicial or disciplinary body to examine the evidence, determine whether any rules have been infringed, and interpret the application of its own regulations.

Because it may entail obtaining documentation, examining player eligibility records, and implementing intricate regulations, the review process may take some time. FIFA might be carefully considering its options to prevent errors.

Nevertheless, Nigeria should be blamed for putting itself in this situation. If the Super Eagles had won their matches, Nigeria would have had a direct qualification like other countries and would not be in this mess. For a football giant like Nigeria, relying on DR Congo’s disqualification is like going to the World Cup through the back door.
