Tupac Shakur was a rapper, an iconic and widely acclaimed hip-hop legend. At the age of 25, he had already sold over 75 million records. Tupac Shakur was killed within a stone’s throw of the Las Vegas strip. The Las Vega police were accused of a clumsy and botched investigation.
Almost three decades after the murder, Nevada officials said they have arrested Duane “Keffe D” Davis, an erstwhile ring leader for coordinating the crime, following his indictment.
Shakur was in the company of Marion “Suge” Knight, founder of Death Row Records when he was killed on September 7, 1996. On the evening of September 7, 1996, Shakur and Knight who drove in a BMW, along with a convoy of cars, to attend a party, came under fire when they stopped at a red light. A white Cadilac had stopped beside them and one of its occupants fired several shots, four of which hit Shakur. He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead about a week later.
Several theories have been associated with his killing one of which was the rivalry between the east coast and west coast. The rivalry had led to an unhealthy competition between Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls
Davis had been a major suspect in the killing of Shakur following the interviews he granted over the years after the incident. In their separate investigations, the Los Angeles police had spotted Davis as the principal suspect. But the police in Las Vegas did nothing about the leads.
In recent times, however, Davis for whatever reason, had decided to make public statements about his involvement in the murder of Shakur. He has acknowledged his involvement in the shooting. He has also published an autobiography – Compton Street Legend – clearly stating what happened in September 1996, how it happened, and the degree of his participation. In the book, he described himself as the one who called the shot in the south side of Compton Crips. “If we were an army, I was a five-star general, he said. He had also claimed in public shows and programmes that he knew the killers of Tupac Shakur, which had remained a mystery for 27 years. According to Davis “I was a Compton kingpin, drug dealer. I’m the only one alive who can really tell you the story about the Tupac killing.”
His death led to one of the biggest investigations in Las Vegas. However, these investigations did not yield any results or provide a positive lead to his killers. The identity of his killers had remained a mystery since 1996 when he was gunned down in a drive-by shooting.
Duane Davis was believed to have witnessed the shooting as he was in the car with the shooter. According to prosecutors, Davis acted as the “on the ground, on-site commander of the effort to kill Tupac” following a brawl with his nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson.
There had been several speculations, rumours, and theories as to who was liable for his death. Apart from the official investigations, individuals, private investigators, journalists, reporters, and researchers have over the years interrogated the issue. The fallouts are books, reports, movies, and commentaries that have been produced over time to solve the mystery. The police were accused of refusal or failure to follow important clues. Though the evidence against Anderson was strong and compelling, it was ignored by the police.
