President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has once again intervened to try to resolve the endless conflict between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor and FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. He has stopped the impeachment attempts against Fubara and asked all parties to sheathe their swords and end the confrontations.
Tinubu warned that extending the conflict and impeachment attempts will weaken governance and stability in the oil-rich state, a critical sector for national politics.
This is the most recent in a protracted struggle for control that has occasionally resulted in emergency rule and continuous political unrest.
Tinubu urges Wike to pull back from pursuing impeachment moves and allow governance to proceed.
The president reportedly also urged Fubara to accept Wike as a prominent political figure with power in state party affairs, a condition aimed to alleviate tensions.
This is not the first time Tinubu has intervened in the Rivers crisis. In October 2023, President Tinubu intervened in the political turmoil that gripped Rivers State by calling on the warring parties to sheathe their swords.
That peace pact collapsed, causing President Tinubu to impose a state of emergency in Rivers and suspend the governor and House of Assembly in March 2025.
Less than two months after the emergency rule and return of Fubara as Governor, another round of crisis has erupted, with threats of impeachment, which have been blocked by a judicial intervention.
President Bola Tinubu has once again interfered in the Rivers State conflict in this aspect.
