A Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Friday, January 30, 2026, invalidated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention held in the city between 15 and 16 November 2025.
With earlier conflicting court orders over the event’s viability, the Ibadan convention was already contentious. Before it happened, a federal judge in Abuja even ordered that it be suspended.
The convention proceeded by using a different ruling from an Ibadan High Court. The Ibadan convention had created a new leadership structure, including Kabiru Turaki (SAN) as party chairman, amid a major internal party struggle.
The Kabiru Turaki faction of the PDP had filed the suit No. FHC/IB/CS/121/2025, demanding recognition of the convention held in Ibadan in November last year and validation of the NWC that emerged at the convention.
The court concluded that the convention was conducted in flagrant disobedience to two subsisting judgments of the same court, and so its activities and decisions are set aside.
It noted that returning to seek judicial approval for conduct committed in contempt of court orders was an exercise in futility.
The court prevented Turaki and other persons elected at the convention from displaying themselves as national officers of the PDP.
The court maintained that the Caretaker Committee led by Mohammed Abdulrahman, alongside Senator Samuel Anyanwu, remained the only acknowledged National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP until a legal convention.
In response, the PDP stated that there is “no cause for alarm” and that its leadership is still lawfully in place while it challenges the ruling.
The Turaki-led group has chosen to appeal the decision because they believe it will be reviewed by a higher court.
The move has increased existing tensions within PDP groups.
