On Tuesday, February 10, 2026, Senate President Godswill Akpabio ordered the Senate to meet again for an emergency plenary session. A statement issued by Senate Clerk Emmanuel Odo made the announcement.

“The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has directed the reconvening of plenary for an emergency sitting on Tuesday 10th, 2026.”

All senators are required to attend the special sitting, which starts at noon.

It is generally believed that the Nigerian Senate’s decision to call an emergency plenary session on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, is related to the debate around the Electoral Act amendment’s electronic transmission of election results.

The date of the emergency session strongly suggests that it might reconsider the rule on electronic transmission or address the political ramifications from the incident, even though the Senate notice did not specify an official agenda.

The emergency session coincides with escalating public outrage over a recent Electoral Act modification that would have required the electronic broadcast of election results in real time.

Opposition leaders, labor unions, and civil society groups criticized the Senate’s decision, claiming it erodes openness in the run-up to the general elections in 2027. Nationwide protests have been threatened by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
