State congresses are scheduled for March, while ward and local government congresses of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have been set for February by a faction led by Abdulrahman Mohammed.

Additionally, the PDP faction has scheduled its national convention for March 28 and 29 in order to pick new leaders. After months of leadership struggles, this has paved the way for the election of a new National Working Committee (NWC).

Following the faction’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Monday night in Abuja, a communiqué was released announcing the decisions. In the communiqué delivered by the faction’s Publicity Secretary, Haruna Mohammed, all measures performed were in strict line with the PDP constitution, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) laws, and subsisting court rulings.

NEC also set a calendar for congresses nationwide and urged the caretaker leadership to immediately activate convention sub-committees and begin logistical and preparatory preparations to ensure a transparent and credible process.

The NEC also affirmed the extension of the duration of the National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC) and other caretaker committees at the state and zonal levels, pending the conduct of the national convention and congresses.

The PDP, Nigeria’s previous ruling party, has been engulfed in a serious factional crisis that might endanger its survival in the 2027 general elections if reconciliation efforts fail.

It would be recalled that a Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State, annulled the PDP’s national convention held between 15 and 16 November 2025, which produced Kabiru Turaki as National Chairman.
