The organizing committee for the 2026 National Convention has been reorganized by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which has appointed former Katsina State governor Aminu Bello Masari as chairman in place of Imo State governor Hope Uzodinmma.
Uzodinmma was appointed to head the 73-member body only a few days prior. The committee has grown to 90 members, and he will now act as its treasurer. Prior to next elections, the convention aims to reorganize the party’s internal leadership structure.
The newly appointed chairman is Aminu Bello Masari. He is considered a senior party official and a former governor. The committee also named former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim as a vice chairman under the new arrangement, along with AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq as the governor of Kwara State and Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni as secretary.
Party officials quoted in the statement say the rearrangement on Friday, February 6, adds more people to the committee to increase representation and improve planning. Among the recent arrivals are top chieftains such as Senator Barry Mpigi.
Uzodinma is a highly powerful member of the APC and the head of the Progressives Governors Forum. As a result, many were surprised when he was demoted from chairman to treasurer.
His dismissal as chairman was not on disciplinary grounds. Neither was it the consequence of misbehavior.
According to observers, these changes are a result of continuing discussions between the party’s various political blocs and attempts to guarantee that the convention runs smoothly with widespread support from influential people throughout Nigeria.
As leadership competitions and internal alliances within the party heat up, party insiders and some political observers say the move seems to be part of a larger internal effort to promote inclusivity, balance, and effective coordination ahead of the national convention.
The party presented it as a committee reorganization to improve convention preparations.
