Jonathan has mostly avoided becoming involved in partisan politics. Jonathan was the leader of Nigeria from 2010 to 2015 when he admitted defeat to Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 election. He turned down a group’s attempt to buy him a presidential nomination form within the ruling APC in 2023. With senior officials, including current and former governors, engaged in quiet conversations, the PDP is now eager to entice him back. He is also being considered by the ADC. Jonathan’s primary selling argument to northern politicians is that he is only allowed to serve one more term under the constitution.
The conversation with Jonathan has progressed. As the PDP gets ready for its national convention in Ibadan in November, he has requested for guarantees from the party. Since Obi is still eligible to run for reelection, most leaders think Jonathan would be simpler to win over northern voters. It’s simple to demonstrate that life was better under the PDP after ten years of APC. Who was the previous president of the PDP? Jonathan. Many people were aware that Jonathan wasn’t the issue; rather, his choice to break the gentleman’s agreement from 2011 to not run for reelection was what made him unpopular. He is still the opposition’s best opportunity to overthrow the APC government, which has caused them a great deal of suffering, because of this. Jonathan may be given an automatic ticket to run for office in 2027 by the PDP.
Political observers claim that former President Goodluck Jonathan has become the stalker of every Nigerian election cycle since his overthrow in 2015. Even while he openly cultivates a life outside of party politics, his name is displayed on campaign buses and his face reappears on billboards. In Abuja, there are rumors that former president Goodluck Jonathan may influence the 2027 election once more. Many individuals have questioned whether Tinubu is in danger from Goodluck Jonathan.
According to several PDP elders, Jonathan is the only one who can restore Nigerians’ sanity and good administration. Since the former president is a native of the South but has long maintained ties with the northern elite, many politicians and political analysts believe that his candidacy is more palatable and logical to those in positions of power. Those calling for the former president claim that his legacy has continued to enhance his reputation both domestically and internationally, especially his role in presiding over Nigeria’s sole peaceful transition of power between rival parties in 2015.
They contend that a disjointed opposition trying to rebrand itself in time for the upcoming presidential race would find a unifying platform in his non-confrontational demeanor and Democratic reputation. Jonathan had a human aspect to his policies, and I doubt he would have the capacity to subject us to this kind of agony under the guise of reform. You may contrast his appointment, which had a national appearance, with the current situation. Many of us are urging him to return since his government was beneficial to every region.
In a similar vein, a lot of people believe that he is still the most unifying force in Nigerian politics today and ought to be invited to bring the nation together. Jonathan continues to be the greatest unifying force in Nigerian politics today, regardless of what people may say about him.
Sule Lamido, a former governor of Jigawa State, also called former President Goodluck Jonathan the PDP’s best candidate for the 2027 presidential election and urged the party to work hard to reinstall him. According to Lamido, Jonathan has prior leadership experience, is well-versed in governance, and gets along well with others. He claims that Jonathan’s experience is unmatched by any Southern party member now in office. He is highly qualified, capable, and extremely welcome. Really, he didn’t see anyone else.
Nonetheless, Dr. Jonathan has been counseled by Nyesom Wike, the FCT Minister and a fellow PDP member, to avoid the temptation to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027. Wike asserts that Jonathan should continue to enjoy respect on a global scale. The folks that played Jonathan in 2015 are the same ones who are dragging him down. All they’re attempting to do is perplex the party. Will those who opposed Jonathan in 2015 not also work against him now? The same political figures who betrayed Jonathan during the 2015 elections are the ones advocating for his candidacy.
Shehu Sani, a former legislator from Kaduna Central, cautioned the former president that the political climate has changed and urged him against running for president in 2027. The PDP, which Jonathan led to victory in 2011, is now weak and dispersed, according to Sani.
Sani claims that since the PDP he once knew has changed, he would counsel Jonathan against running for office. According to him, “The PDP in the South-West is endorsing the president. Some members of the party are in the coalition. So, it is the party he used to know, so he should not waste his time.”
