Jonathan ought to stay out of the 2027 race

Although Jonathan is a formidable candidate, many people would rather that he continue to be the statesman for whom he is famous. He is respected because he has done his best in his role as president.

It is anticipated that the south will provide the next president in 2027, and that northern Nigeria will take over in 2031. According to some, Jonathan shouldn’t run for office to preserve southern unity. This is based on the supposition that disregarding the rotational setup will hurt the south, as former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, from the north, is likely to run for office in 2027. Jonathan is a strong southern candidate who can divide southern votes and jeopardize the current president’s chances of winning reelection.

Jonathan, the former president, may choose to run for office, but his wife, the former First Lady, is adamantly against it. She has openly denied that her husband will run against President Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election. Mrs. Jonathan stated that her family would support Tinubu’s reelection rather than run for office.
Jonathan, however, has increased discussions for the 2027 presidential ticket despite his wife’s protests. Top politicians, retired generals, and former leaders of state are putting more and more pressure on him to return to Aso Rock in 2027, turning his Abuja home into a political hotbed.

Jonathan still seems troubled by the way he lost the 2015 presidential election to the late Muhammadu Buhari, the first opposition candidate in the nation’s history to beat an incumbent president, even if he is interested in running for president in 2027.

Goodluck Jonathan, the former president, has said that he was deceived when running for reelection in 2015. According to Jonathan, a lot of Nigerian politicians are unreliable. In September 2025, Jonathan made the statement at Chief Mike Aiyegbeni Oghiadomhe’s 70th birthday celebration in Benin, the capital of Edo State. From 2010 to 2014, Oghiadomhe was the Chief of Staff under Jonathan’s administration.

Nigerian politics is characterized by disloyalty, according to former President Goodluck Jonathan, who claims that his allies deserted him during the 2015 elections.

“Politics in the Nigerian standard is about betrayals. I witnessed a lot of betrayal during the 2015 election,” he remarked.

“You will find it difficult to see somebody who will say the same thing in the morning, say the same thing in the afternoon, and in the evening.

“They will tell you something this minute, and in the next hour, they will say another. For the next hour, they will say another thing. But I am quite pleased to associate with Oghiadomhe.”

The former president described Oghiadomhe as a reliable and trustworthy politician who could “take a bullet” for him. According to Jonathan, Oghiadomhe is one of the few friends he has who can stick out their necks for him. “For me, he is somebody you can take his words to the bank. Most politicians, you cannot take their words to the bank.”

With these kinds of remarks by Jonathan, what is the assurance that politicians, particularly those from the north, who have betrayed him in the past, won’t do so again in 2027? Instead of running for office and being humiliated once more in 2027, it would be preferable for him to continue being the wonderful statesman that he is.

Before deciding to enter the race, he ought to reconsider. All that glitters is not gold. Returning to Aso Rock for a further four years will only benefit those who are urging him to run for office. On this platform, we believe he shouldn’t run.
