For more than two years, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been in turmoil, and its leaders have recently been suspending and resuspending one another. While the situation continues to upset Nigeria’s biggest opposition party, the standoff has further splintered the party’s leadership, with both sections asserting legitimacy.
On Thursday, November 6, 2025, a few PDP members peacefully demonstrated outside the US Embassy in Abuja. According to reports, the PDP Like-Mind Group is organizing the demonstration, which has as its theme “Save Our Democracy from Intimidation Protest,” in an effort to rally support from the local and international population.
In order to protect Nigeria’s democracy and stop its purported transition to a one-party state, they demanded foreign involvement. The demonstrators are sending protest letters to the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, the Ministry of Justice, the US Embassy, and the European Union complex in Abuja. Among other things, the protesters held posters that read, “Please save our democracy from intimidation,” “Stop party opposition intimidation,” and “Fix PDP, fix Nigeria, save our democracy.”
The protesters claim that the country’s multi-party political system is under danger because opposition members are increasingly being intimidated by the ruling party. The demonstrators say the ruling party is intimidating opposition members excessively and that the country is moving toward being a one-party state. To protect Nigeria’s democracy and stop the nation from devolving into a one-party system, they are looking to the international community for assistance.
Ayodele Fayose, the former governor of Ekiti State, has denounced the protest that a PDP faction staged at the US Embassy in Abuja, calling it a disgraceful final act of a failed leadership. He chastised PDP chairman Umar Damagum and other PDP leaders, questioning whether the US and EU countries had a responsibility to assist in reviving a political party in Nigeria.
