Numerous well-known politicians have defected from opposition parties to the ruling All Peoples Congress (APC) in waves as Nigeria gets ready for the national elections in 2027.
Kano, a strategically important state with the most votes in the nation, is the source of the most recent defection news.
Sometime in January 2026, Abba Yusuf, the governor of Kano State, and several members of his NNPP will switch from the NNPP to the ruling APC.
The defection talks have proceeded to a more advanced stage. With his departure, Governor Yusuf would remove the NNPP from the list of parties in power in Nigerian states and break his long-standing relationship with Rabiu Kwankwaso, his political patron.
Following a meeting with important members of the Rogo LGA, including the council chairman, council members, and party leaders, Abdullahi Rogo, Director General of the Protocol Directorate at the Kano state government house, spoke on behalf of the Kwankwasiyya movement.
“During the meeting, we unanimously agreed to appeal to the Governor of Kano state, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, and the national leader of our great party, Engineer Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to lead us in defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC),”
“This decision was taken in the best interest of Kano state’s development and the political progress of Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
“We strongly believe that his ambition to become the president of Nigeria stands a better chance of being realised within the APC.
“This was the major resolution reached at the meeting, and all members of the NNPP, as well as supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement in the Rogo local government area, agreed with this position.”
Rogo urged Kwankwaso and Yusuf to take the initiative and stated that the group had no plans to leave the Kwankwasiyya movement.
He claimed that the group had urged Kwankwaso and Abba Yusuf, the governor of Kano, to guide them into the ruling party and that the planned defection was in the best interests of Kano.
However, the defection rumour has divided the NNPP in Kano State. The party has appealed to members to remain loyal to the NNPP and advocated public support for its leader, Musa Kwankwaso, ahead of the elections in 2027.
