According to leaks from early January 2026 in Katsina State, the state government had begun the process of freeing suspected bandits who were being tried for crimes. It was stated that the intended release was a must for the peace agreement between the bandits and the frontline local governments to continue.
To maintain an ongoing peace agreement with armed groups in the state, the Katsina State Government has revealed why it started the release of 70 people who were allegedly involved in banditry.
The goal of the action, according to Nasir Muazu, Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, is to consolidate peace accords already reached between affected communities and repentant bandits across several local government areas.
The Katsina State government claims that the agreement resulted in the release of about 1,000 people who had been held captive by the alleged bandits in several incidents.
“All over the world, after wars, prisoner exchanges usually take place,” Muazu said, drawing a comparison between the suspects’ release and prisoner exchanges during battle. Prisoners were traded during Nigeria’s civil war, precisely as in Boko Haram discussions.
