Senator Godswill Akpabio, the president of the Nigerian Senate, has instructed his attorneys to drop all of the defamation cases he has started against different people.
He made the revelation on January 1, 2026, after a New Year’s Mass at Sacred Heart Parish, Uyo in Akwa Ibom State. He claimed that the priest’s sermon had inspired him to let go of the charges.
The Senate President declared, “Therefore, I hereby direct my solicitors to withdraw all lawsuits against them.”
In contrast to a legal surrender, his statement presented the withdrawal as a personal choice motivated by introspection and advice during the church service.
According to Akpabio, he currently has nine defamation lawsuits in court. He gave his lawyers clear instructions to drop all of the lawsuits.
“I had almost nine cases in court against some individuals who defamed me, who lied against me, and slandered my name. But as I listened to the priest, I suddenly realised he was speaking to me,” Akpabio stated.
Among the lawsuits withdrawn is a 2025 defamation action worth N200 billion brought against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
According to media reports, the decision will conclude all of his defamation-related court battles at the beginning of 2026.
