The 2025 criminal defamation and cyberbullying accusations against Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan have been dropped by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

This ruling ended what many see as a high-profile prosecution that sparked significant political discussion and garnered national attention.

Due to remarks she made in a television appearance accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello of conspiring to assassinate her, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was charged with criminal defamation and cyberbullying.

According to reports, Bello and Akpabio petitioned the appropriate authorities after Natasha’s comments, which led to her being charged with cyberbullying and criminal defamation.

The criminal proceedings against the senator representing Kogi Central were terminated on December 12, 2025, when the Office of the Honourable Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) filed a Notice of Discontinuance before the Federal High Court, Abuja Judicial Division, according to certified court documents obtained in Abuja over the weekend.

The Notice of Discontinuance states that the prosecution was discontinued under the inherent powers of the court and in compliance with the provisions of Sections 108(1), 108(2)(a), and 108(5) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2015.

Officials from the Federation’s Department of Public Prosecutions signed the paper on the Attorney-General’s behalf, and the court formally certified it.

The Federal Government’s decision to abandon this case is unclear. It is evident that at the beginning of 2026, the Senate President announced the dismissal of all defamation actions he had filed against a number of people, indicating a step in the direction of reconciliation.
