Dr. Daniel K. Olukoya, the founder of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) International, filed the lawsuit against Ms. Maureen Badejo, a Nigerian blogger located in the UK, under Claim No. QB-2020-003625 in the London High Court for defamation.
The court noted that Ms. Badejo did not have a strong legal defence that could stand up to examination and that the defamatory campaign was extensively disseminated online.
On October 22, 2021, the London High Court of Justice (Queen’s Bench Division) decided that Ms. Badejo had to pay Dr. Olukoya and his wife, Folashade Olukoya, £100,000 in damages for defamation.
The overall punishment was £100,000, with Dr. Olukoya receiving £65,000 in damages and his wife receiving £35,000.
The court concluded that the blogger had damaged the couple’s reputations by publishing untrue and disparaging remarks about them. In order to amend the record, it also mandated that she post a summary of the ruling on nine of her social media accounts for ten days in a row.
Ms. Badejo appealed the case following the initial ruling. However, the UK court rejected the appeal.
This decision serves as a reminder that although people have the right to free speech, defamation laws shield people and public figures from untrue claims that damage their reputations. When reputations are unfairly harmed, the law offers remedies.
Influencers, bloggers, and social media users who disseminate unsupported statements about others may face financial and legal repercussions.
