Reports that some contested gas and crude oil wells have been suggested for ceding to particular oil-producing states have been denied by the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, which maintains that no such decision has been made.
The commission’s chairman, Dr Mohammed Shehu, said in a statement released on Sunday that the RMAFC had taken notice of a report that was circulating in some parts of the country’s media and was allegedly issued by the Inter-Agency Committee on the Verification of Coordinates of Disputed Crude Oil and Gas Wells between States.
It stated that the report was premature, deceptive, and did not accurately reflect the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission’s stance or findings.
The commission emphasized that the process of the contested oil wells was still ongoing and clarified that it follows a transparent and well-defined method when handling assignments of national importance.
It revealed that on Friday, February 13, 2026, the inter-agency committee merely sent it a draft report. The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, the National Boundary Commission, and the Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation are the pertinent technical and statutory stakeholders to whom the draft document has been sent in accordance with established protocol for thorough review, comments, and technical input.
The statement states that the commission’s internal tripartite committees, which include the Committee on Crude Oil, Gas, and Investment and the Legal Matters Committee, would examine the issue further after receiving the agencies’ views and recommendations.
Before presenting their results to the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission Plenary Session for discussion and final recommendations, these committees will conduct thorough technical and legal evaluations.
The commission further clarified that its final report would be formally sent to the President and the Attorney-General of the Federation for evaluation and further action in accordance with applicable laws and constitutional provisions when the institutional procedures were completed.
The RMAFC reaffirmed its dedication to openness, due process, and the impartial fulfilment of its constitutional role for the benefit of the country.
Shehu further reassured the impacted oil-producing states that the commission will maintain its objectivity throughout the process and urged them to actively participate in charting confirmed coordinates of disputed and recently drilled wells.
