The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued a warning to Nigerians to cease misusing the Naira, emphasizing that the national currency is a symbol that should be handled with care and respect.

Mrs. Hakama Sidi Ali, CBN Acting Director of the Corporate Communications Department, reminded the public that misusing the Naira is illegal and advised them to preserve its cleanliness. The CBN has identified eight actions that amount to the misuse of Nigerian Naira. Any of the following actions is prohibited by law:

• To spray the Naira banknotes during ceremonies.

•To write on banknotes.

•To staple the banknotes as the pins corrode the banknotes.

•To tear the banknotes.

• To stamp or dance on Naira banknotes; to apply ink or oil to the banknotes, as this is also considered defacing.

• To offer banknotes for sale.

• To destroy the Naira notes.

• To refuse the Naira.

Any of these offences is punishable under the CBN Act. A few people have been found guilty of misusing the Naira. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) detained and charged Cubana Chief Priest, also known as Pascal Okechukwu, a Nigerian socialite, with Naira abuse before a Federal High Court.

Two social media influencers, Bukola Rufai and Abdulateef Jimoh, were found guilty of misusing Naira notes by a Federal High Court in Ibadan, Oyo State.
