One month after the conclusion of the AFCON championship in Morocco, the aftermath of the chaotic final match continues to make headlines. 19 Senegalese football fans were on Thursday, February 19. given prison sentences ranging from three months to a year by a Rabat court for violent incidents that occurred during the 2025 AFCON final, which saw Morocco lose to Senegal 1-0 at home.
Four supporters were condemned to six months, four to three months, and eleven were given one-year penalties. Additionally, they received fines ranging from 1,000 dirhams to 5,000 dirhams ($545).
Convicted of hooliganism, the supporters have been detained since the Senegal vs. Morocco final on January 18. Acts of violence against law enforcement, invasion of a pitch, projectile throwing, and willful destruction of sporting goods were among the allegations.
Initially, the prosecution requested a two-year term for several of the defendants, claiming that their acts caused a major disruption to the sporting event that was televised live to millions of people. It further claimed that the defendants had made a conscious effort to interfere with the match’s proper conduct.
The defence counsel stated that it would appeal, arguing that his clients were victims.
According to the prosecution, the stadium’s material damage was estimated to be worth around 4 million Moroccan dirhams ($430,000).
