At a summit in Abuja on Saturday, January 24, 2026, the National Forum of Former Legislators (NFFL), which is composed of former members of Nigeria’s Senate, House of Representatives, state assemblies, and local government councils, formally supported President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office ahead of the country’s 2027 general election.

Former lawmakers from all around the federation attended the conference, which had as its topic “National Unity and Nation Building Beyond 2031.”

Ahead of Nigeria’s national elections in 2027, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is mobilizing institutional and stakeholder support for President Tinubu’s reelection campaign, and this endorsement is a part of a larger political effort.

Additionally, the Forum endorsed Tinubu as its only presidential candidate for the 2027 election cycle and passed a vote of confidence in his leadership. The communique issued by the Forum read in part:

“We adopt President Bola Tinubu as our sole candidate for the 2027 general election.

“We reaffirm that dialogue, consultation, and peaceful engagement must always remain Nigeria’s primary tool for resolving political, social, and regional challenges.

“Nigerian issues must be resolved by Nigerians through dialogue, constitutional and democratic means.”

Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau was one of the speakers at the ceremony, and he emphasized the importance of maintaining governance continuity and Tinubu finishing his reform agenda.

Support for rotational presidency was one of the Forum’s main takeaways. By saying that Tinubu, as a Southern president, should serve out his eight-year constitutional term before the presidency returns to the North in 2031, several endorsers linked their support to the idea of power rotation between Nigeria’s North and South.

“In keeping with the spirit of fairness and national balance, we affirm that the presidency should return to the Northern region in 2031, after the completion of the Southern presidency,” the communique added.

The statement emphasized that maintaining leadership will support the consolidation of democracy and national cohesion.

To guarantee long-term stability and predictability in upcoming elections, the Forum recommended that the power-rotation system be firmly established in the Constitution.
