Nigerians have been warned by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) that counterfeit Goya olive oil is being sold in the country. Nigerians were cautioned not to purchase or ingest Goya oil marketed in PET plastic bottles since the goods are dangerous and fake.
The agency claims that only Goya oil imported in original bottles by authorized distributors is considered legal in Nigeria; authentic goods are never packed in plastic (PET) bottles.

In Oke-Arin Market, Idumota, Lagos, NAFDAC agents discovered an illicit Goya oil production facility where fake oil was produced locally and repackaged to look like the genuine product.

According to reports, the phony oil was created by crudely combining burnt palm oil with coloring additives before being offered for sale to unwary customers.

Due to its lack of legal regulation and approval for human use, NAFDAC claims that the counterfeit product presents significant health concerns.

The Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Dr. Martins Iluyomade, strongly cautioned the public to avoid PET-bottled Goya oil.

According to him, “Goya oil sold in plastic bottles is fake and poses severe public dangers due to toxic additives.”

The organization is particularly warning market vendors and religious organizations from distributing or selling Goya oil in plastic bottles, as they are not authentic goods.

NAFDAC has issued a warning that those who distribute or sell counterfeit goods may face legal action.

The public is urged by the agency to contact the closest NAFDAC office to report suspected counterfeit Goya oil.
