A well-known politician with close ties to the Babangida government was Chief Arthur Nzeribe. He turned into a weapon used by the military government to thwart the plan for the shift to civil rule.

He was a strong opponent of Abiola’s emergence and subsequent election triumph. Nzeribe asserted that the Jos convention, which elected Chief MKO Abiola as the presidential flagbearer of the SDP, was not a free and fair procedure.

He accused Abiola of manipulating delegates during a press conference. He asserted that Abiola was covertly favored by the military establishment and that the primaries were influenced by money.

Nevertheless, Nzeribe never offered any proof of rigging. Option A4, an open queue system, made rigging more challenging.

There is compelling evidence that the procedure was open. The convention’s decision represented the delegates’ wishes. Therefore, Abiola’s emergence at the Jos convention was lawful. By endorsing the procedure and the victor, rival candidates acknowledged the result.

As a result, Chief Arthur Nzeribe’s assertion that the Jos conference lacked fairness and justice was driven by politics.

His claims of manipulation and his subsequent involvement in the annulment on June 12 point to political rather than moral concern.
