“My name is Abubakar Atiku Abubabakar, but everyone calls me Abba, I am here today to formally announce my exit from my former party, where we worked in 2023, and my decision to join the APC,” Atiku’s son said after defecting to the APC and pledging support for Tinubu.
The son of former vice president Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Abubakar Atiku Abubakar has joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), promising to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reelection in 2027.
On Thursday, January 15, 2026, the defection was formally revealed at the National Assembly, when APC leaders from the Northeast and Senator Barau Jibrin, the Deputy President of the Senate, welcomed Abubakar, also known as “Abba.”
Speaking to party leaders and supporters at the function, Abubakar confirmed his support for the APC and announced his resignation from the PDP, calling the decision historic and intensely personal.
He ordered all of his coordinators and members of his political organization, which was established in 2022 under the name Haske Atiku Organization, to join the APC right away and back President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He credited the Tinubu administration’s performance and Senator Barau Jibrin’s exceptional leadership style for his choice.
“Today, I’m to formally announce my exit from my former party to the APC following the outstanding leadership style and quality of His Excellency, the Deputy President of the State, Senator Barau I. Jibrin.
“With this development, I will work with Senator Barau to actulise the second-term bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027. To this effect, I am directing all coordinators of my association to join the APC and work for President Tinubu,” he added.
Comrade Mustapha Salihu, the APC National Vice Chairman (North East), welcomed him into the party and said the defection was far-reaching.
“Today is one of my happiest days. We are looking beyond old social and political cleavages. This young man has seen the policies and programmes of the Tinubu administration and decided to align with them,” Salihu said.
He assured Abba of equal rights and chances within the APC, emphasizing that the party was motivated by ideology and policy direction rather than individual ambition.
In his speech, the Deputy Senate President praised Abba for bolstering the APC’s consolidation effort ahead of the general elections in 2027, calling the action audacious, prudent, and moral.
“You have made a decision based on ideology. You did not come here because of your father. You came because you believe in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, his ideology and the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Barau said.
“He is young, focused and determined to contribute to shaping the future of our country. This is the kind of youth Nigeria needs,” Barau added.
