Following violent scenes after Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Algeria in the AFCON 2025 quarterfinal match, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened an investigation. Chaos broke out on and off the field after the game.

Algerian players and supporters went on the rampage while the Super Eagles displayed poise both on and off the field.

At full time, Algerian players surrounded referee Issa Sy and his aides in a tense standoff over disputed rulings.

Following their defeat, Algerian players chased the match officials into the tunnel. Frustrated Algerian fans tried to break through barriers and demolish portions of the stadium as the disturbances spread into the stands.

Following the rioting in Marrakech, Algerian camera operators and irate fans were taken into custody by Moroccan authorities.

After losing to Nigeria in the quarterfinals, Algeria plans to file a protest with CAF.

The officiating during the match against Nigeria has angered the Algerian Football Federation (FAF).

The Federation has compiled several grievances against Issa Sy, the referee from Senegal. These include the allegations that the referee was biased against Algeria, favored Nigeria, denied Algeria a clear penalty, and made several dubious rulings.

The Super Eagles, however, have started training ahead of the pivotal semi-final after returning to their base in Fez.
